Tutor Trust - Who are we?

The Tutor Trust is an award-winning education charity working across the north of England to help close the attainment gap. We do this by delivering educational support through small group, or one-to-one, tutoring sessions. The regions we currently work in are Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, Merseyside and Tees Valley.

About us: closing the attainment gap

We have over a decade of experience and work predominantly with pupils either in receipt of Pupil Premium funding or in schools serving a low-income community. In the previous academic year, 92% of our tutees either received Pupil Premium or attended a school in a low-income area.

We want all pupils to receive the support they need to overcome any obstacles they face in achieving their full potential.

Quality and impact focused

Tutor Trust is focused on high-quality and impactful programmes. We have a dedicated Quality and Impact team, including former teaching staff, who oversee our impact management approach across the organisation.

We gather and analyse data from: pupil demographics and attainment, pupil baseline and endpoint assessments, sessional data like tutoring attendance and hours of tutoring received, and pupil performance in SATs and GCSEs.

All of our tutors are recruited through a rigorous selection process, undergo our training programme, and have access to development opportunities throughout the year. They are provided with ongoing monitoring and support from our in-house team of qualified teachers alongside external professionals and academics, as well as our online training hub.

Our programmes

We work in a variety of educational settings – across primary schools, secondary schools, as well as in colleges for GCSE resits, and outside of schools when delivering more specialised programmes for students with additional support needs. 91% of our schools said they would recommend us to another school or college!

Our mainstream programmes are delivered on-site in schools and are usually 15 hours in total, or a minimum of 12 hours, as our research shows that these are the most effective for having an impact on pupils.

Our mainstream primary programmes:

  • Maths
  • Reading
  • GPS (grammar, punctuation and spelling)
  • Phonics

Our mainstream secondary programmes:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Science

Our additional programmes, which support specific groups of learners, are:

  • Tutoring Plusour program - me for pupils who need more bespoke 1:1 support.
  • Axiom Maths – a fully-funded maths programme for high-achieving PP secondary students. Learn more here.
  • Post-16 – we offer English and Maths tutoring with pupils who need support through GCSE resits.

We know that funding is a key challenge for schools and colleges. As a registered charity, our focus is on delivering cost-effective, impactful interventions, not making a profit. Support from generous funders helps to keep our programmes as affordable as possible. Our programme costs for 2024/25 are:

  • £30 per hour (£7.50 per student per hour based on groups of 1:4)
  • £450 15-hour programme cost (£112.50 per student based on groups of 1:4)
