NHS Cadet/St. Johns Ambulance Programme: FREE for Academies & Schools

Are you a school or college looking for new opportunities to develop the employment skills of your young people?

NHS Cadets is the latest national programme developed by NHS England and St John Ambulance. The programme is designed to enable young people aged 14-18 (up to 25 for young people with additional needs or disabilities) to explore clinical and non-clinical career options in the NHS, while strengthening their personal and professional skills for the healthcare environment. NHS Cadets are particularly keen to engage young people from diverse backgrounds who may be experiencing challenges in their lives, including those with additional needs and disabilities.

NHS Cadets is split into two pathways and can be delivered over a 26 or 36 period of weekly sessions during term-time and/or intense two-week sessions in the school holidays.

The Foundation Pathway is aimed at young people aged 14-16 and the Advanced Pathway is aimed at young people aged 16-18.

The Foundation Pathway is delivered in Schools and builds confidence, transferable skills and provides an introduction to volunteering. The Advanced Pathway is delivered in community settings as well as a school or college and develops critical awareness, personal resilience and next steps into healthcare.

The NHS Cadets programme provides your school or college with a unique opportunity to offer learning opportunities that will enhance the PHSE or Carers Guidance pathways in the year 9 – 12 curriculum and beyond. The flexible delivery model makes the programme suitable for a wide range of educational settings including non-formal, alternative and SEND provision.

By adopting this partnership model with your school or college, St John Ambulance can provide all the necessary materials and oversight to fulfil the programme. Your staff will take responsibility for the delivery of NHS Cadets at the heart of the local community, in a trusted environment and as part of your typical timetable, but with a bespoke approach that will best support your students to succeed.
